Lotto America

Lotto America is one of the oldest lotto games in the United States having started in 1988. Lotto America started as a cooperative of seven United States Lotteries. The seven states that came together to launch Lotto America include Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Unsurprisingly, it is also these seven states which came together to form the Multi-State Lottery Association which Lotto America is a founding member.

What is Lotto America

February 13, 1988, is the first day that a Lotto America draw was conducted. At that time, all players were required to pick seven lucky numbers from a total of 40. A few years after the first draw, Lotto America temporarily stopped operations in 1992 following the emergence of Powerball. 25 years later, 13 states came together to revive Lotto America in a 5/52 + 1/10 Star Ball format.

A lucrative add-on dubbed the All Star Bonus was also added. The revived game also came with new features such as the removal of the rollover requirements and the use of game sales and interest rates as the replacement. Also, Monday was added as an additional draw date meaning the game now had three weekly draws.

How to Play Lotto America

One of the most impressive things about Lotto America is that players can enjoy it either online or at retailers in person. To play online, simply head over to the official site at lottoamerica.com to purchase your ticket and pick your lucky numbers. If you however prefer purchasing the ticket in person at retailers, you need to follow the steps outlined below:

  • Visit any of the authorised Lotto America retailers in your jurisdictions
  • Pick up the playslip and proceed to pick your five lucky numbers from a pool of 52
  • Proceed to pick the Star Ball from a pool of 10 numbers
  • If not feeling very lucky, there is an option of using the Quick Pick or Easy Pick options. These options allow the bot to randomly select lucky numbers
  • If you prefer selecting more than one line of numbers, you can repeat the above steps. Note however that each line costs $1 hence more lines mean a bigger ticket price
  • If possible, select the number of draws you wish to enter
  • Decide on playing or not playing the All Star Bonus bearing in mind it costs $1 per line
  • Hand in your playslip and pay the purchase price to the retailer agent
  • Wait for the draw to take place and check your ticket if you are a winner.

States that Offer Lotto America

13 states currently offer Lotto America. Namely, these include Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Lotto America Draw

For long, Lotto America just had two weekly draws. However, just recently the lottery added the third draw. The draws take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 pm Eastern Time. The draws are conducted in Tallahassee, Florida and they are independently audited by external adjudicators. The only shortcoming of the Lotto America draws is that there aren’t any televised live draws. To compensate for this, however, there is a video animation during the live draw that displays the drawn numbers in real-time. The official Lotto America site also does have a ticket checker which allows players to see if their ticket has won or not.

Ticket Price

A great attribute of Lotto America is that it has one of the lowest ticket prices as the base price is set at $1 per play. However, there is the optional All Star Bonus which allows players to pay an extra $1 if they want to enhance their non-jackpot prizes by a random win multiplier of up to 5x.

If players opt for the latter, they will receive the full advertised jackpot amount in 30 annual payments spread over 29 years, with the first payment made as soon as the claim is validated. All prizes above $5,000 are subject to a federal tax ranging from 24% to 37%.

Key Things to Note About Lotto America

  • Each playslip must have 5 marked numbers between 1 and 52 and one marked number between 1 and 10. Marking the incorrect amount of numbers invalidates the slip
  • The playslip must only be marked by blue or black ink. Any other ink used invalidates the playslip
  • The responsibility of verifying the information printed on the playslip lies with the player
  • It is the player’s responsibility to keep the ticket safe. Lotto America won’t be liable for lost tickets even if they are winning tickets or jackpot tickets
  • The player may only win one prize per line of Lotto America numbers and only the maximum eligible prize will be paid out
